Going into the election, Democrats held a commanding 54-26 seat advantage in the New Jersey General Assembly; however, a strong showing from Republicans in District 1 has resulted in two seats flipping in Republicans’ favor (New Jersey General Assembly districts are two-member districts) putting partisan control at 52 Democrats to 28 Republicans.

In a special election for Senate in District 1, to replace Jeff Van Drew, who moved up to Congress, Republican candidate Mike Testa, defeated incumbent Bob Andrzejczak changing partisan control at 25 Democrats and 15 Republicans. Senator Steve Sweeney will begin an unprecedented sixth term as Senate President when the new legislative session convenes in January, 2020. Assemblyman Craig Coughlin will enter his second term as Speaker of the Assembly. The new legislative session commences January 2020 and ends January 2022.
